The acrosomal reaction is the process by which sperm unite with the egg and proceed to fertilize it. The test examines whether spermatozoa are capable of carrying out an acrosomal reaction.
The inability of sperm to perform an acrosomal reaction is associated with low fertilization rates. In these cases, the PICSI technique is chosen in order to select spermatozoa with acrosomal maturity in the laboratory.
